:: Artist Statement ::
My mind wanders into some pretty dark corners these days.
Perhaps I should explain. Motherhood has probably informed my work and process more than any other influential life-change I can think of. I switched to water-based mediums when I became pregnant with my daughter to avoid the toxicity found in the solvents and oil paints that I loved working with. I changed my working hours from day to night so that I could have {somewhat} uninterrupted studio time. Being a parent changed the way I work and what I paint - ideas about home, family, heredity and the emotional attachments that come with all of it connect the dots between my imagination and the need to make something representative of those concepts.
Born out of necessity and made with what is close at hand, I began making small-scale, five-minute (now days-long) drawings to experiment with figurative imagery and play with free-association. It was my hope that these little sketches would lure me out of a months-long creative slump and I found that my non-attachment technique allowed me to explore themes of devotion, heart-break, a personal aversion shared with Nikola Tesla (the only commonality between us).
These experiments have allowed me to investigate the issues surrounding my attempt to reconcile my role as a mother with my identity as an artist. I often feel torn between the two - fearing that I don’t give either my family or my work the time that they deserve. There is stress and dysfunction and all manner of messy imperfections in my life - I gravitate towards that current of calamity and chaos while at the same time I am desperate to escape it. For me, the push and pull of these conflicting forces are fascinating – like a diamagnetic field of desire and discontent, longing to be both near and far from the people and things I cherish.
